New York, NY
Garry Grant is pleased to partner with The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt, an innovative and engaging fundraising initiative that will place over 250 large egg sculptures – each designed by globally renowned artists, designers and creative professionals – throughout New York City’s five boroughs from April 1st to 26th, 2014.

Grant, a native of Detroit, is an abstract painter who began his career as a figurative artist but in the last decade turned to abstraction, focusing more on the use of color than narrative or subject matter. For the Fabergé project, he applied his signature gilding technique using silver and copper leaf as the underpinning of the design to create vibrancy and varying degrees of depth to the background. For the foreground, he used a mixed-media technique to apply shellac and acrylic paint onto the egg by hand until attenuated forms covered the entire surface. Grant then finished the egg with hand-painted brush highlights. The design is inspired by one of his signature triptych paintings entitled Life is a 3-Ring Circus (2012). The result is masterful.

“I am honored to have been selected to participate in The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt,” says Grant. “This is a great opportunity to support worthy charities. In addition, I was able to expand the boundaries of my approach to painting by translating the techniques that I use on canvas to a three dimensional form.”

Grant created his Fabergé egg at The Sol Studio, a work and exhibition space for artists located in central Harlem. Since 2012, the studio has supported a range of content creators from artists and photographers to videographers and producers. “When Garry asked to use the studio to create hisegg, we immediately agreed,” said owner Lewis P. Long. “Garry was one of the first artists to present his work at The Sol Studio. Supporting talented emerging artists like Garry is a very important aspect of our mission.”

Created as an innovative and engaging platform to raise funds for Elephant Family and other non-profits, The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt caused frenzy in London in 2012, set two Guinness World Record titles and ultimately raised over $1.5 million for charity. The 2014 hunt in New York will benefit both Elephant Family and Studio in a School. The general public will be encouraged to participate in The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt by finding all of the eggs, with incredible gemstone prizes from Fabergé serving as an incentive. The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt will culminate with a spectacular auction of the collectible and one-of-a-kind egg sculptures – including the one produced by Garry Grant – at Sotheby’s and online via Paddle8. Limited edition miniature eggs and other merchandise will be available for purchase at www.thebigegghunt.org.
