Debra Cartwright

Debra Cartwright
Debra Cartwright is a Harlem based artist with Art Studio, Art History and graphic design degrees from the University of Virginia and Parsons School of Design respectably. She’s had opportunities to work in the publishing and advertising departments of Essence Magazine, Condé Nast, and now People.com
Sampling from classic venus figural poses, Cartwright depicts the femininity, vulnerability and humanity of black women. Her paintings use light and fluidity to draw the viewer into a fantastical representation of the natural form. She believes in the potential for her paintings to encourage discussion of the strong black woman trope still prevalent in society.
She is a watercolor artist influenced by the fashion and beauty images that dominate the media landscape. Her effeminate collage materials, flower petals and gold leaf, enforce this goddess motif. Cartwright encourages audiences to consider these feminine representations of black women as spaces for psychological and socio-political exploration.
